Following the violence between fans in both the buildup and aftermath of their match in Marseilles, Uefa have warned both England and Russia could face disqualification from the Euros tournament. The FA’s chief executive, Martin Glenn, has asked the English supporters to be on their best behaviour.
Violent scenes like those witnessed over the weekend in Marseille have no place in football, nor society as a whole.
Claims have been made that the tactics of the police dealing with the violent incidents and inadequate organisation exacerbated the situation, and there are fears that there might be further violent clashes at certain other upcoming fixtures.
After seeing this promising young England side playing positive attacking football, seemingly unburdened by the failings of the past, it would be tragic to see them have to exit the tournament under such depressing circumstances.
