Against All Odds

Cameroon's women's football Gabrielle Onguene, Madeleine Ngono Mani

After going a goal down to opponents Switzerland, Cameroon made a surprise comeback in a thrilling second half, winning the game 2-1. The Swiss dominated the first half, and Anna-Maria Crnogorcevic’s low volley in the 24th minute looked like it might be enough to secure victory. However, Cameroon began the second half with passion and desire, and Gabrielle Onguene’s equaliser two minutes in, showed they weren’t prepared to exit their first World Cup tournament without a fight. Madeleine Ngono Mani’s spectacular diving header provided the winning goal securing them second place in the group behind Japan.

Switzerland now have a tense wait to find out if their third placing in the group is good enough to qualify for the knockout stages.
