Yesterday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield was a tense affair, as both sides are fighting to finish the season in the top four. Maybe it’s not that surprising that the match was peppered with so many acrimonious incidents, but it was Steven Gerrard who’ll be making the headlines today for all the wrong reasons.
Juan Mata’s goal in the first half put United ahead. At the start of the second half, Gerrard was brought on for Lallana, but he was only on for 38 seconds before he was shown the red card by referee, Martin Atkinson, for a crunching stamp on Herrera. Mata scored a second spectacular scissor kick for United, before Sturridge pulled one back for ten man Liverpool. Then in injury time, Rooney squandered the chance to make it three after his penalty was saved by Mignolet. The match ended 1-2.
Manchester United are now fourth in the Premier League table, while Liverpool are fifth. Only time will tell whether Gerrard’s outburst will cost Liverpool the Champions League place they’ve worked so hard all season to secure.
