Pressure is steadily mounting on Liverpool after losing away to Newcastle yesterday. They are now 12 points behind leaders Chelsea, and 6 points behind where they were at the same time last season when they had the combined strike power of Luis Suarez and currently injured Daniel Sturridge.
Mario Balotelli, who was brought in to compensate for the loss of Suarez, has not yet hit form, and is yet to score despite having played in 8 Premier League matches, although he has scored twice in cup matches. Even if he does start to find the net, it is unlikely that he’ll come anywhere close to Suarez’s tally of 31 goals last season.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s dramatic return to form sees them soar up the table to 11th place. While Alan Pardew may be enjoying a reprieve, pressure is surely mounting on Brendan Rodgers to make the ‘calculated risk’ of signing Balotelli, pay off.
