Van Gaal’s peculiar decision to change goalkeepers after extra time for last night’s penalty shootout between Holland and Costa Rica is being heralded as a stroke of genius. Tim Krul, the Newcastle United goalkeeper faced his first action of this World Cup with the daunting task of stopping Costa Rica’s penalty shots, which would make or break Holland’s World Cup survival. Despite the pressure, Krul managed to save 2 of the 5 penalties, ensuring the Netherlands a place in the semi-finals. When questioned afterwards, Van Gaal admitted that substituting goal-keeper Jasper Cillessen for Krul for penalties was always the plan because his greater height and reach would give him an advantage.
